ATS Licensing handles the licenses for ATS software applications. When an ATS application is run it checks if a license is available. If it is then the application is allowed to run.

In order to describe how the licensing system works we'll describe the interaction of the following.

We'll see how these items interact at three key stages.

If the ATS Licensing Server service is restarted, all active license leases in the system will be released/lost.

License files are imported to the database

Program licenses are supplied as license files. These are requested and received directly from ATS. They are imported to the licensing database using ATS Licensing Server Manager.

The license records in the database can be viewed by users using ATS Licensing Server Manager.

ATS Licensing Server service

ATS Licensing Server runs as a service that manages license requests from clients. The Service communicates with the database containing product licenses.

An ATS software application requests a license

Each ATS product is subjected to license and the licenses are managed by the ATS Licensing Manager and therefore the customers must have the ATS Licensing Manager installed on their network.

The ATS product is installed with a specific version and a specific feature that goes with it. Each feature represents a license that is a part of one license set.

Each ATS application contains a configuration that points to the ATS Licensing Manager. When a user activates one of ATS Products the application contacts the configured ATS Licensing Manager to obtain a license. The request is configured to contain information such as product name, product version, feature name and the type of the license.

The Service checks if there is an available license for the product. If there is, the program is allowed to run.

License types

The ATS Licensing Server Manager supports five different types of licenses:

Permanent: Production licenses that once activated do not expire. On the first import they are bound to an activation date, which defines the date until the license can be activated. After that date the license is not available but can be activated.

Leased: Leased licenses have an expiration date after which they cannot be used.

SaaS: The Software as a Service licenses expire on a specified expiration date, after which they can no longer be used.

Demo: Used for demo purposes and have an expiration date after which they cannot be used. Customers can request an additional demo license or move to a permanent license.

Internal: For use by ATS personnel only.

The License store grid will show different information depending on the type of the license and its current status. It will show the license type as well as expiration date and/or activation details for license types where this is applicable.

Permanent, Leased and SaaS licenses need activation before specified "activate by" date. After activation permanent licenses never expire, while leased and SaaS licenses expire after the end of their lease period (example 6 or 12 months).

Demo and internal licenses do not need activation and will expire after their expiration date.
